Anaga's Path of the Senses

If you want to connect with the emotions that surround the trails, put all your senses on alert and don't miss out on everything this natural space has to offer.

In this post, we introduce you to one of the most emotional trails on the island of Tenerife, the Path of the Senses.

This is a very special experience in which you will have to use your senses to appreciate the nature that surrounds the Anaga Rural Park, one of Tenerife's treasures.

The Anaga massif is one of the oldest areas of the island and an ecosystem of endemic species such as the laurel forest: a living fossil that has survived in the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores.

Where the roads meet

The Path of the Senses goes deep into the laurisilva forest, also known as the 'monteverde', which is located in the Rural Park of Anaga

This trail is part of a network of trails starting at Cruz del Carmen, which in the past was a Royal Road connecting the villages of Anaga with the city of La Laguna .

It was therefore the way to make the exchange of goods and agricultural products possible.

Cruz del Carmen offers a large free car park and an information office for all the trails available in Anaga.

Right in front of the office, this spectacular trail begins.

Also, before making the trail, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city of La Laguna from the viewpoint that is located in Cruz del Carmen.

Important note: you should know that at the information office you can find audio guides for this trail.

However, you can do it on your own if you prefer.

Dare to Feel

The most important thing in order to discover the magic that surrounds this path, is found in you, you must dare to feel and for this you must make way for your senses.

These three routes are called the Path of the Senses because as you walk along them you can get to know their nature through the senses of hearing, smell, sight and touch

Along the way, you will find several signs that indicate which sense you should strengthen. The signs you can find are drawings of a hand, an eye, a nose and an ear

When you come across one of these signs, what you should do is stand in that spot and use, for example, your sense of touch to get a feel for the different textures of the moss on the laurel trees, or perhaps use your sense of sight to see the incredible ramifications of the tree roots sticking out of the ground.

You can also discover the variety of flora that surrounds this laurel forest, such as laurel trees, wild aceviños or viñátigos, as well as the common ferns plants, ivy, morgalla and capitana.

Important note: for the enjoyment of all those who wish to follow this path, a large part of this route has been adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Exploring the Senses

The Path of the Senses is a circular path and can be done in a short period of time, since its duration is between 30 and 40 minutes.

Therefore, it is also ideal for the youngest members of the family.

Also, as it is a low difficulty trail, you don't need to be an expert in hiking, as the important thing is to live a new experience feeling its natural beauty.

This trail has three short and easy routes:

First track: Awaken your senses

This first route is the shortest of the three, as it is only 350 metres long.

This is the most suitable route for people with motor or sensory disabilities.

An easy route where even young children will enjoy an experience through the senses.

The section is situated at the beginning of the path and offers a footbridge and a small wooden terrace.

Second route: Let yourself be surprised

This second route belongs to the Camino Real and has a distance of 550 metres.

This part of the trail is characterised by its circular shape and low gradient.

The laurisilva forests will draw your attention to the unique beauty of this trail.

On this ancient royal path, we will observe the elements of the environment and we will discover different smells, sensations and wonderful views unique to this path.

Along this route you will find steps carved into the ground and a bridge and a wooden footbridge on the heights.

Third route: What the monteverde contains

This third route is a little longer, with a distance of 1,200 metres, as the path starts from the main section mentioned above.

When you reach the end of this part of the trail you will come to the Llano de los Loros viewpoint, from where you will have magnificent views of the city of Santa Cruz and the Barranco and Presa de Tahodio ravine.

Also, if it is a sunny day you will be able to see the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria in the background.

On this circular route, we will live different experiences through smell, sight and hearing. Discover the different elements that the endemism of the Canary Islands provides us with, take a break and feel nature!

Important note: the unevenness of this third part of the trail and its low level make it a little difficult to walk for some people, but this depends on the special physical conditions of each person.

It is therefore not an adapted path for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

As you have been able to see, this trail is not just any type of path on the island of Tenerife.

It will give you the opportunity to feel the way through smelling, seeing, touching and hearing the nature that surrounds...

Would you like to feel the experience and get into it? Go ahead and leave us a comment about what you thought of this trail.

Important notice: for your safety, don't forget to check the state of the trail to see if it is in good condition, as it may be partially or totally closed after some adverse weather phenomenon.
