Prehistoric forest in La Gomera

This forest owes its peculiarity to the period it comes from, more than 20 million years ago it extended across the Mediterranean basin. But during the Tertiary period, a series of glaciations occurred that caused the laurisilva forest to move to more temperate areas in the south.

What is laurisilva forest?

The Canarian laurisilva forest is a type of subtropical forest found in some of the Canary Islands. It is closely related to other forest formations common in the rest of the biogeographical area known as Macaronesia.

It is made up of tree species of the Lauraceae family, which together with the Fayal- Heathland make up the so-called green woodland.

Characteristics of Laurisilva forests

It has deep soils and is characteristic of the midlands (between 600 and 1,500 m above sea level) on the windward side (facing north), influenced by the trade winds, free of frost, with rainfall of 500 to 1,100 mm and an average annual temperature of between 15 and 19ºC.

The laurisilva forest of one of the islands that forms part of the Canary Archipelago: La Gomera. The Garajonay laurisilva forest is a vestige of the prehistoric Tertiary Era, declared a National Heritage Site in 1986.
