Art and Wine | Marta Arañó, the artist who uses red wine as ink

Senda: How did you discover the art of painting with wine?

Marta: After many years in the world of painting and living in a wine region, I wanted to transform the art that exists in a bottle of wine into art on a blank sheet; after many tests and seeing that the works lasted I decided to take this path, to which I have dedicated myself professionally for the last 5 years.

Until recently, professionally you only did pastel drawing, what technique do you like to use the most?

I feel very comfortable with both, but at the moment I only paint with wine.

Have you done any of your work for other parts of the world?

Yes, I have work in the USA, Holland, France, Italy and the UK.

What is live painting about?

This is an activity that I carry out at tastings, pairing dinners and events where wine is the protagonist and which consists of creating a work of art in a short period of time (between 1 and 2 hours). The result shows how a work of art created live can be as original as one created in the studio, with less work but no less quality and originality.

Does the colour of wine change a lot on paper?

Each wine, each vintage, each grape variety, has its own tonality and this is accentuated by oxidation, giving the work greater beauty.

What kind of wine do you like to work with the most, and why?

Each wine has its own beauty and behaves in a different way on the plate; they all excite me and always create an uncertainty in the final result that makes the creation of the work even more exciting.

How important do you consider the care of the vineyard to your work?

I would say that it is the other way around; for me the work of the winemaker is so important, his effort and constancy, that my obligation is to do a good job with his wine out of respect for his work and dedication.

Do you run workshops for all ages, is there a difference between them?

Yes, I hold several workshops, always designed for the age of the participants; in the case of children and young people, they paint with wine without alcohol and recycle the cork stoppers from wine bottles; in the case of adults, we comment on the wine used and taste it while we paint with it; I also hold workshops for families where creativity and work between parents and children make art their greatest expression.

If there is one thing I always like to point out, it is to convey that in order to experiment with painting with wine it is not necessary to know how to draw, just to want to experiment and enjoy this new technique.

Welcome to the art studio, glass of cava for the adults and must for the children, visit the workshop, projections of the wine area, explanation of the technique of painting with wine, very dynamic and fun practical workshop, to finish with a brunch in the garden.

Do you think it would be interesting to include this activity in Catalan schools?

Yes, I already do some of them and the results are really impressive. In these workshops we get to know the wine culture, the landscapes, the different growth cycles of the vineyard and the colours of the grape varieties from a different perspective, from the world of art.

What projects would you like to carry out in the near future?

I have many projects and a great desire to bring this experience to many people, creating totally personalised activities in the field of painting with wine, raising awareness of our wine-growing region and transmitting respect for the environment.

I look forward to your visit in my painting studio or I hope to see you in one of the activities that I organise all over Catalonia or in the Peninsula.

Also, I am currently preparing an exhibition with wines from all over the world, enjoying varieties and tonalities unknown to me until now.

This exhibition will be travelling around the Peninsula and abroad. If you want to have more information about my activities or my work you can check my website tintaivi.com or look for me on social networks like tinta_i_vi on Facebook and Twitter or tinta_i_vi on Instagram.
