Wines in Tenerife

Before the fame of the famous Canary Island banana, Tenerife became known to the rest of the world thanks to its Malvasia wines. The "Canary Wines"conquered the European courts, because for many years the winegrowers and winemakers of Tenerife have been committed to the quality of their wines.

Proof of this are the five designations of origin that currently exist on the island. If you want to delve into its history, the best way is to take a tour of Tenerife's main wineries.

What are the wines in Tenerife like?

Logically, there is no single type of wine in Tenerife. In fact, there are as many varieties as there are wineries in Tenerife. In general, we can say that these wines have two fundamental characteristics.

The first is its volcanic properties, high concentrations of minerals as a result of soils that emerged from the accumulation of lava and ash from Teide.

The second is the saltwater carried by the trade winds, which are responsible for the subtropical climate of the Canary Islands. For this reason, the wineries of Tenerife are grouped according to the different denominations of origin, and each denomination has its own characteristics.

Tenerife Denominations

The Denominations of Origin (D.O.) are a regional, national and international recognition of a food product. For being produced in a specific geographical environment, with specific natural and climatological characteristics, with a raw material originating from that environment or with historical and traditional production systems.

It is therefore a brand of quality and prestige. With five denominations of origin, Tenerife is the island with the highest wine production. Between Güimar, Abona, Icod, La Orotava and Tacoronte, around 60% of the Canary Island's grapes are concentrated.

From mid-July to mid-November, making it the longest harvest in the world. With altitudes ranging from 50 to 1700 in the south of the island, where the highest vineyard in Europe is located in Granadilla; and on the north coast with altitudes ranging from 50 to 1000.

At the same time, they have the greatest varietal richness. Below you will find a list of wineries in Tenerife classified according to whether they are located in the north or south of the island.
