ABANDONED PLACES IN TENERIFE

In 1943 a sanatorium with stratospheric dimensions that was initially intended to be a leper colony and to take care of the sick after the Spanish Civil War, but never came to an end . Are you interested in different places? Then don't miss this list of abandoned places on the island of Tenerife.

Former leprosarium in Abades

Former leprosarium

Located on the coast of Tenerife's Arico, you can see a building crowned with a large cross. It is an authentic abandoned town, built of rough stone from the south, the colour of which blends in with the landscape. It consists of a group of 41 buildings, among which "the church" stands out, located at the highest point and visible from the whole complex.

The Abades Sanatorium was designed to house leprosy patients. It was believed that the solution to this medical problem was to isolate those affected in places that had favourable climatic conditions and were far from the main centres of population in order to avoid people's fear of contagion.

Nowadays, it is a meeting point for paintball, photography and night raves. Popular legends also say that rituals are performed here and that there are paranormal presences, but we'll leave that to more qualified investigators.

It's true that it's a very sinister place, but if you like mysterious places you shouldn't miss it. Did you know that scenes from the Spanish TV series Plan America were filmed there?

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Spa

Spa

For decades it was the meeting point and summer resort for thousands of Tenerife residents, and although it now belongs to the Canary Islands Government and is listed as protected by the Town Hall, it is in a state of neglect. It was designed by Domingo Pisaca Burgada and closed its doors in 1992.

Fuset House in La Laguna

Fuset House

Located in the Anaga massif, specifically in El Monquinal, in an area of difficult access, is this abandoned house, which belonged to Benito Pérez Armas, a well-known Canarian politician, journalist and writer, who married Elena González de Mesa in 1914, whose family had owned the land around the house since the 18th century.

After the death of Pérez Armas, the place passed as property to Lorenzo Martínez Fuset, of Andalusian origin, who lived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

La Casa Fuset is frequently linked to paranormal phenomena and has been featured in one of the episodes of the television programme Cuarto Milenio for this reason, as well as in the radio programme Milenio 3.

Óscar Domínguez's castle in Mesas del Mar

A castle that is not a castle, is that possible?

Castle of Mesas del Mar

If you follow the Mesa del Mar tunnel and go the whole length of Playa de la Arena, there will come a moment when it is no longer possible to continue, at that point, look towards the overhanging cliffs above and you will see a house with a tower crowned by battlements, you will think is it a castle, but it has nothing to do with the defence of the coastline.

It was a recreational estate, the whim of a rich landowner belonging to Tacoronte. It is known as the Castillete de Guayonje or, simply, the Castle of Óscar Domínguez, a famous Canarian painter.

La Gordejuela water elevator

Water lift

Due to the amount of water that emanated from this coastal cliff in Los Realejos, this hydraulic pumping station was built, which served to raise the water to the cultivation areas.

The building has 5 floors built on an almost vertical cliff, but currently the levels are buried due to the rubble and deterioration of the building. For the curious who want to visit and access this place, it is possible to do so by following the Rambla de Castro path.

Hermitage of San José in El Escobonal

San José Chapel

Belonging to the municipality of Güimar, in the south of the island, the remains of a completely abandoned architectural work and the memory of what it once was remained. Only three walls of this original construction from the mid-18th century are still standing.

A storm destroyed it in 1927 and there were no means or subsidies to restore it until 2003, when the ruins and the altar were blessed, and the accesses, floor and lighting of the chapel were modernised.

The skeleton in La Matanza

Situated on the coast, there are the remains of what would have been a tourist accommodation, which was never completed. I am especially surprised that they started the construction of this building as this place is protected and situated on a cliff that is difficult to access.

St Andrew's Bunker

Views from the San Andres bunker

In the mountains of San Andrés, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is a bunker from the Second World War that was built to protect the island from a hypothetical attack. It has 4 rooms and three machine-gun nests, from whose slots we have a spectacular view of the Playa de las Teresitas.

Urbanization huts in El Porís

Urbanization huts, El Porís

In the south of the island, on the right side of the road towards the Punta de Abona lighthouse, we can find some curious huts that look like tents out of a western film, although they have been tuned with the typical street art format.

Apparently, it is the show flat of a housing development that was never built, and the huts in question were painted by the Canarian artist Lauro Samblás. When you go for a swim in the area, you can come and take a look at this particular place and let us know what you think.

If you like mysterious places, you can't miss these incredible hidden places that we secretly show you.
